The early production models, produced between November 1942 and June 1943, featured distinctive features such as a cylindrical cupola, smoke grenade launchers, and an air cleaner mounted on the rear of the hull. These early production models were primarily deployed to newly formed heavy tank battalions and were deployed primarily on the Eastern Front. Initially, they were truly invincible and posed a threat to the Allied forces.
